Switches, Outlets And Reach Ranges
Electrical positions are set during design and built into the module before lining, which makes them one of the cheapest things to get right and one of the more expensive to move afterwards.
What heights should switches and power outlets be at in an accessible dwelling?
Switches and controls sit within a reachable band that is lower than conventional switch height, and outlets sit higher than conventional outlet height, so both fall inside the range a seated resident can use. Positions are also set clear of internal corners, behind doors and above benches, because a reachable height in an unreachable location is still unusable.
Switch height is the smallest item in an accessible dwelling and one of the most direct. A resident who can turn on their own lights is doing something for themselves. A resident who cannot is calling somebody.
The principle
Conventional switch height suits somebody standing. Conventional outlet height suits somebody bending.
A seated resident can do neither comfortably, so both move toward each other into a shared band: switches lower, outlets higher. Every control in the dwelling sits inside that band, and the standards and the [design guidance](/blog/ndis-sda-design-standard-explained) set the range.
That includes the items people forget are controls. Thermostats. Intercoms. Alarm panels. Blind controls. The oven. The rangehood. The hot water controller if it is inside.
Position matters as much as height
A switch at the correct height in a corner, tight against a doorframe, or behind an open door is not reachable.
Which means the plan is read for approach as well as height: can a wheelchair get close enough, square enough, with enough clear floor beside it, to operate the switch with the hand the resident uses.
The positions most often wrong:
**Behind a door swing,** where the switch is only reachable when the door is shut.
**Tight into an internal corner,** where a chair cannot square up.
**Above a bench,** which puts the outlet beyond a seated reach because the bench blocks the approach. Outlets serving a bench belong on the front face of the joinery or at the side, not at the back of the splashback.
**At the head of the bed** with no second position at the foot, so a resident in bed cannot reach the light.
**One switch for a long room,** when the resident enters at one end and settles at the other.
The positions worth adding
**Two-way switching** on any room a resident enters at one point and occupies at another. Bedroom door and bedside. Hallway at both ends. Living room at both entries.
**A bedside control cluster,** with light, power, data and a call point together, at a height reachable from the bed rather than from beside it.
**Outlets in pairs,** because an accessible dwelling runs more equipment than a conventional one, and because a chair charger, a hoist charger and a medical device do not take turns.
**A dedicated circuit and a considered position for the wheelchair charger,** which is a [storage](/blog/storage-in-an-accessible-dwelling) question as much as an electrical one.
**Power at the door head** for an automated operator, whether or not one is fitted at handover, which is part of the [assistive technology](/blog/assistive-technology-in-supported-accommodation) provision.
Switch type
A large rocker or a wide plate is easier to operate than a small one, for a resident with limited hand function and for a resident who operates a switch with a knuckle or an elbow.
Where a resident cannot operate a switch at all, the answer is a different control method rather than a different height, which is again the technology provision rather than the electrical layout.
Why this is a factory item
Electrical rough-in happens before the ceiling and wall lining goes on, indoors, off a drawing.
Which means the positions are measured and installed to the documented heights rather than marked up by whoever was on site that day, and they are checked before they disappear behind plasterboard.
Moving an outlet after handover means opening a wall. Getting it right costs nothing beyond the drawing it is on.
